Village of the Wolves
A preserved mountain village in the heart of Peneda-Gerês National Park. Centuries-old traditions, the wolf trap, a suspension bridge and breathtaking landscapes.
Fafião is one of the most authentic villages in Peneda-Gerês National Park. With fewer than 100 inhabitants, it keeps alive medieval communal traditions such as the vezeira — the collective shepherding system — and is one of the few places in Portugal where the atmosphere of an intact traditional mountain community can still be found.
An ancient dry-stone wolf trap with centuries of history. One of the best-preserved structures in the Iberian Peninsula for wolf capture. Accessible by a marked trail.
Panoramic viewpoint with a suspension bridge over a stunning valley. The views over the mountains and valleys of the National Park are absolutely memorable, especially at sunset.
A natural emerald-coloured pool hidden in the forest. Access via a dirt track through eucalyptus and oak trees. A hidden gem for the more adventurous visitor.
Perfectly preserved traditional granite architecture. The cobbled streets and centuries-old stone houses transport visitors to another era.
A communal shepherding system in which village inhabitants take turns caring for livestock on the common pastures. One of the few villages in Portugal where this medieval tradition is still practised.
Although wolf hunting has been banned for decades, the memory of this tradition lives on in the Fojo do Lobo and in the stories of the elders. The Iberian wolf still exists in the region.
Linen weaving is a centuries-old tradition in Minho. Some Fafião families still produce handmade pieces using ancestral techniques.
Fafião is about 25 km from Vieira do Minho via mountain roads. A vehicle with good ground clearance is recommended. GPS: 41.7891, -8.1456
Spring and summer for hiking and swimming in Poço Verde. Autumn for forest colours and fewer visitors.
Trekking boots, water, sun protection and a camera. There are no shops or restaurants in the village.
Fafião is an inhabited village. Respect residents' privacy and do not enter private properties.
